Email and accounts
Gmail is not receiving email. What should I check?
Email can stop appearing because storage is full, messages are going to Spam or All Mail, filters are moving them, or the app is not syncing.
The short answer
Check Spam and All Mail, search for the missing sender, check Google storage, refresh the app or browser, and verify filters or forwarding if you know how.
Now try it on your device
Choose your path
Pick the device or situation that matches the screen in front of you.
Steps for Gmail app
- 1Open Gmail and pull down to refresh.
- 2Check Spam, Promotions, Updates, and All Mail.
- 3Search for the sender.
- 4If the app still seems stuck, open Gmail in a browser to compare.
One safety note
Do not give someone your Gmail password or verification code.
Before you change settings
1Send yourself a test email from another account if possible.
2Search Gmail for the sender's name or email address.
3Check whether Google storage is full.
What to know first
What this usually means
- Google storage is full.
- The message is in Spam, Promotions, or All Mail.
- A filter moved or archived it.
- The sender typed the wrong address.
Do not do this yet
- Do not give someone your Gmail password or verification code.
- Do not click password reset links unless you requested them.
- Do not delete filters unless you understand what they do.
