Computer basics
How do I update Windows without messing up my computer?
Windows updates are safest when you start from Settings, save your work, plug in the computer, and give it time. Fake update pop-ups are a separate problem.
The short answer
Save your work, plug in the computer, open Settings, Windows Update, install updates from there, and do not interrupt the restart unless it has been stuck for a very long time.
Now try it on your device
Choose your path
Pick the device or situation that matches the screen in front of you.
Steps for Windows
- 1Save and close important documents.
- 2Plug the laptop into power.
- 3Open Settings, then Windows Update.
- 4Choose Check for updates or Install, then allow restarts to finish.
One safety note
Do not install updates from pop-up ads.
Before you change settings
1Start updates when you do not need the computer for a while.
2Use Settings, not a random pop-up or website.
3Plug in a laptop before starting.
What to know first
What this usually means
- The computer has not updated in a long time.
- The update needs a restart.
- The drive is low on space.
- A fake browser pop-up pretends to be a system update.
Do not do this yet
- Do not install updates from pop-up ads.
- Do not shut the laptop lid while updates are installing.
- Do not unplug power during a major update.
